Your drain keeps blocking, or a survey has found a crack. You want to know whether it can be fixed without digging up the drive. Most of the time it can. This page sets out how the repair is done, how we quote for it, and who pays for which pipe.

Drain repair in Derby starts with a closed-circuit television (CCTV) survey to find the fault. Then comes a no-dig fix from inside the pipe wherever it can be reformed. That might be a resin liner for a run of cracks, or a localised patch over a single defect. How we find the fault before we repair it

No engineer can quote for a drain repair from the surface. The fault is underground, and the only honest way to see it is to put a camera down the pipe. That is why most repairs we carry out begin with a CCTV drain survey.

If the drain is blocked when we arrive, we clear it first. That is usually done by rodding or high-pressure water jetting, so the camera has a clear run. The footage shows the pipe material, the position of every joint and the defect itself.

A fractured collar, the socket where one clay pipe joins the next. A joint that has dropped. Roots coming through a crack, or a length that has lost its fall and holds water.

You get the recording and a written report, with the defect measured from a known chamber. That distance matters. It is what lets us say whether a patch will cover it. It also tells us whether the whole run needs a liner, or whether the pipe is too far gone for either.

Skipping this step is how people pay twice. A drain that is jetted every few months is not being repaired.

Drain relining

Drain relining is a no-dig repair for a cracked or deteriorating drain. A liner soaked in resin is inserted into the existing pipe through a chamber. It is inflated against the pipe wall and cured in place. A new pipe is formed inside the old one along the full length of the run.

It suits a drain with several defects. These include a series of cracks, open joints at intervals, or root ingress at more than one point. Once cured the liner is smooth and jointless, which removes the very joints the roots were getting in through.

The work is done from the existing chambers, or from a small access pit at one end. The drive, the patio and the floors stay where they are.

Relining matters most where digging is restricted. Darley Abbey, DE22, is a conservation-area mill village on the Derwent. It is part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. The Georgian mill-workers’ cottages there have some of the oldest drainage in the city, and strict rules on external works. A repair that never breaks the surface is the first choice here, not a luxury.

Relining suits foul drains (the ones carrying waste from toilets and sinks), storm drains and culverts across Derby and Derbyshire.

Drain patch repair

Where relining treats the whole run, a drain patch repair treats one spot. It is a short length of resin-impregnated material cured in place. It covers a single crack, an open joint or a short section of damage.

We use it when the survey shows one defect in an otherwise sound pipe. A root through one joint. A crack under a drive that was laid over the run. A displaced joint where a Victorian clay drain meets a later extension.

The patch is wrapped on an inflatable packer, then pushed to the exact distance measured on the survey. It is inflated so the resin bonds to the pipe wall, then left to cure. When the packer is withdrawn, the pipe is sealed at that point. The bore, the inside diameter of the pipe, is barely reduced.

Patching is quicker and cheaper than lining a whole run. The pipe is back in use once the resin has cured. Where a survey finds two or three defects close together, we tell you which is the better value. That might be separate patches, or one liner.

Manhole repair

The pipe is not the only thing that fails. A manhole, or inspection chamber, is the access point on your drain, and it has its own faults. Brick chambers on older Derby houses lose their benching, the sloped mortar that guides flow into the channel, and their render. Waste then sits in the base instead of passing through. Cast-iron covers crack, seat badly and rock under a car.

We repair the chamber itself. That means rebuilding benching and re-rendering walls. It also means replacing a broken cover and frame. It means raising or lowering the frame too, so it sits flush with a new drive or patio. Where a chamber is beyond repair we tell you so and explain the options.

Cover and frame work is worth doing before it becomes a problem. A poorly seated cover lets surface water into a foul drain that was never sized for it. A rocking cover on a shared drive is just as much a drainage fault, and a trip hazard too.

Chamber faults are often what our engineers spot while surveying something else. We point them out even when you called about a different problem.

When digging is the only option

Some drains cannot be repaired from inside. A liner needs a pipe it can follow. A section might have collapsed flat, dropped so far that the camera cannot pass, or been crushed under a foundation.

If so, there is nothing to line. The same applies where the pipe has lost its fall and holds water along its length. A liner copies the pipe it is in, faults included.

In those cases the honest answer is that the failed section has to be dug out and replaced. We tell you that from the footage rather than sell you a liner that will not hold.

Excavation is disruptive. On a Victorian terrace with a shared run, it can involve a neighbour’s yard. It is the last resort, and never the first quote.

Your drain or Severn Trent’s: who pays for the repair

Before any of that is priced, it is worth knowing whose pipe it is. Severn Trent Water owns and maintains the public sewers in Derby. Since the 2011 transfer of private sewers, most pipework beyond your property boundary became their responsibility. So did any shared drain serving more than one property. The drain that serves only your property, inside your boundary, is yours to repair.

That line matters more in Derby than in most cities because of how the housing was built. The late-Victorian terraces around the Arboretum sit on original salt-glazed clay drains with rigid joints. The Arboretum opened in 1840 as England’s first purpose-designed public park.

Many terrace drains share a run between neighbours. A defect on that shared section is usually Severn Trent’s to fix. A defect on the branch from your own gully (the grated drain outside the kitchen) to the shared run is usually yours.

The survey report settles it.

It locates the defect relative to your boundary and the chambers. That is what Severn Trent will ask for if the fault is on their side. If it is on yours, the same report is what you quote from. It is also what an insurer wants if you are claiming for accidental damage to underground services.

The final driver is whether the defect suits a patch, a liner or a dig. A single patch on a shallow domestic run and a full liner under a driveway are different jobs. The quote will say why.

Drain repairs across Derby and Derbyshire

Where you live in Derby predicts what the survey will find. In Littleover, DE23, the Edwardian and inter-war semis have mature gardens. Tree roots working into the joints of clay drains are the usual reason a blockage there keeps coming back. A liner removes the joints the roots were using.
