What happens when you call us

Call at any hour and you speak to Drainage Emergency, not a call centre. We take the address, what is backing up and where the water is showing, and send the nearest engineer. Our office is on Mansfield Road, DE21, a few minutes from Chaddesden. That makes the east side of the city usually the shortest run.

On arrival, the engineer lifts the nearest inspection chamber. This is the manhole in the garden, yard or drive, and it shows where the blockage sits. The engineer then tells you what it will take to clear, and what that costs. Nothing starts until you have agreed the price. There are no hidden fees, and for work quoted under two thousand pounds you pay on completion.

Rodding is often the quickest fix, and it frequently clears the job on the first visit. Where it will not shift, the engineer brings in high-pressure jetting. Where the cause is not obvious, or the drain has blocked before, the engineer runs a camera through the pipe. This shows you what is there.

Useful to have ready: your postcode, which fixtures are affected, and whether you know where your outside chamber is. None of it is essential. All of it shortens the visit.

Is your blocked drain an emergency?

Three signs mean stop and call now. A chamber lid is lifting. A yard gully, the grated drain that takes the sink and rainwater outside, is overflowing with grey water. Or waste is coming back up through a downstairs toilet or shower tray. Every flush and every load of washing adds to what is already backed up.

The earlier signs are quieter. A toilet that fills higher than normal before slowly draining. A gurgle from the bath plughole when the kitchen sink empties. A smell of drains at the front door that comes and goes with the weather. Each means a partial blockage that is still letting some water through, and it will not clear itself.

Two rules of thumb. If only one fixture is slow, the problem is in that fixture’s waste pipe. If two or more fixtures on different floors are affected at once, the blockage is further down. It sits in the soil stack (the vertical pipe the toilets drain into) or the underground drain. That is drainage work rather than plumbing.

Who is responsible for a blocked drain in Derby?

The drain that serves only your property, inside your boundary, is yours. Beyond that it is usually Severn Trent’s. Pipework past your boundary, and any shared drain, became Severn Trent’s responsibility in the 2011 transfer of private sewers. Severn Trent is the sewerage undertaker for Derby. If a blockage is in a shared run or the sewer, Severn Trent should clear it at no cost to you.

The catch is finding out where the blockage is. In the late-Victorian terraces around the Arboretum in Normanton and Rose Hill, most houses have their original salt-glazed clay drains. Shared runs between neighbours are common. A blockage in one house often shows up next door first.

The engineer will tell you where the blockage sits. If it is in a section that belongs to Severn Trent, we will say so. You can then report it to them rather than pay us to clear it. Tenants should ring their landlord or agent first, because a private drain is the property owner’s responsibility.

Drain rodding

Drain rodding is the manual clearing of a blockage using rods pushed through the pipe from an access chamber. It is the first tool out of the van on most callouts. Rods screwed together with a plunger or worm head reach a soft blockage within a few metres of the chamber. They break it up or pull it back.

It is the quickest fix for the most common blockages. Those are paper, wipes, a build-up of fat, or debris settled in a low point in the pipe. Where the drain runs straight and the chamber is near it, rodding finishes the job on the first visit. The jetting unit never has to come off the van.

The 1930s to 1960s semis across Chaddesden are a typical rodding job. They have long back-garden runs to a rear gully on original clay pipe, with a chamber at one end. If the blockage is within reach of the chamber, rodding is often all the job needs.

Rodding has limits. It will not cut through hardened scale, root growth or compacted silt. Pushed too hard, it moves a blockage further along the pipe instead of removing it. When an engineer feels that kind of resistance, the answer is jetting, not harder pushing.

Drain clearance

Drain clearance is the full job. It means clearing the blockage and flushing the run through to the sewer. It also means confirming the pipe is clear, not just flowing for now.

Where rodding cannot shift it, the engineer brings in high-pressure water jetting. A hose fed into the pipe from the chamber pulls itself forward on a rear-facing nozzle. It cuts through grease, silt, scale and root ingress, and washes the debris downstream.

On the flat ground around Alvaston Park in DE24, drains have shallow falls. Silt and fat settle out faster there than on sloping sites. Those runs get cleared once by rodding and block again within weeks. Jetting removes the build-up rather than punching a hole through it.

After clearing, the engineer runs water through and watches the chamber to confirm it flows away. If the drain has blocked before, or the cause is not obvious, a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera goes through the pipe. This happens on the same visit. The footage shows whether the blockage was a one-off, or a symptom of a cracked or displaced pipe. A damaged pipe is a repair job, not a clearance.

Why Derby drains block: the houses behind the callouts

The oldest private drains are in the terraces around Derby Arboretum. It was England’s first purpose-designed public park, opened in 1840. Salt-glazed clay with rigid joints is the norm across Normanton and Rose Hill. Those joints have had well over a century to displace, and every displaced joint is a ledge that catches paper.

These carry foul waste and rainwater in one pipe, between shops, pubs and the flats above.
